A small herd of young Red Poll cattle has been brought in to graze the land at Wat Tyler to actively promote the growth of our recently-restored wild flower grasslands. This will help ensure that the park remains a thriving habitat for rare and threatened species like the Shrill Carder Bee.
The Red Polls have come to Wat Tyler direct from the Queen’s Royal Estate in Sandringham, as part of a larger herd centred around Hadleigh Park. The docile breed, well suited to interaction with people is originally native to East Anglia and thrives on rough vegetation. They’re a perfect fit for Wat Tyler and great for visitors who want to take a closer look.
Wat Tyler has been awarded government funding as a Nature Improvement Area, one of only 12 across the country. The cattle are being looked after by a dedicated team member whose role is funded by the Veolia North Thames Marshes Trust, and who will be assisted by an apprentice who will learn traditional animal husbandry skills and whose training will also be funded by Veolia.
Luke Bristow, senior consultant ecologist at Essex County Council said:
“Lack of grazing is one of the biggest threats to flower-rich grasslands and other open habitats. In the absence of livestock, tall grasses and scrub will eventually replace the flowers that rare insects depend upon. The Grazing and Grassland Project was conceived to provide bespoke heritage grazing at sites where commercial grazing is not feasible. The funding from the NIA and Veolia is vital, and is helping to improve the environment of some of south-Essex’s finest places for wildlife.”
